Nursing students Sanida, John, and Michael are in the final semester of their nursing program and are a little bit anxious about the capstone course, one of the final courses before their long-anticipated graduation. They have heard this is an evidence-based practice (EBP) course that involves integrating previous nursing knowledge to complete a team-driven EBP project. From conversations with previous graduates, they learned that the course involves being able to work effectively within a team to accomplish each phase of the evidence-based practice process.
Sanida, John, and Michael have previously worked together on class projects and have decided to work together to complete this task successfully.

They are eager to begin their EBP assignment. The student team has chosen a project with an objective to focus on safe sleep practices (ways of putting infants to sleep to prevent sleep-related deaths) to reduce infant mortality among teen mothers. As part of their team, they will be collaborating with their course instructor, a project director, and an advanced practice nurse from a regional community hospital. In fact, it was the project director who had the curiosity to consider questioning safe sleep practices among teen mothers in the community. They realize that their instructor and the project director would be very important members of the team to provide direction, feedback, and ultimately, to help them gain the confidence to become EBP champions in the workplace.

The team examined international, national, state and local data related to infant mortality rates (IMR). The county where Sanida, John, and Michael reside is ranked in the top 10 counties for having the highest infant mortality rate (IMR of 8.5 per 1,000 infants) in their state. From prior classes they recall that EBP focuses on identifying best practices to improve patient outcomes. This includes using the best available evidence, clinical expertise, preferences of patients/families, and the resources available to answer their question.
They are ready to begin by developing a PICO question. They start by setting up a schedule for team meetings, signing a team contract that defines ground rules, and developing a project management plan that includes status reports deadlines and meetings with their instructor and project director.

Sanida, John, and Michael wonder what the best practices for infant safe sleep are and how can they implement a program to educate caregivers, parents, and teen mothers to lower the infant mortality rates in their community.

Based on their past knowledge of the evidence-based practice process, they recognize the importance of scoping and scaling their PICO question to develop a realistic timetable for implementation.
