Read the introduction paragraph:
Despite the promise that technology is set to bring a positive impact in education, research has indicated that continued overuse of technology in the classroom could actually prove to be more harmful than beneficial. Technology in the world has taken over almost every area of human life, and the education sector has not been left behind. Before the use of technology in learning, educators would put out learning information on chalkboards, and students would write notes in their exercise books while seated at their desks.
However, technology has brought forth new ways of education, such as using stylus pens as opposed to chalkboards, using e-books instead of textbooks, and at times, having classes virtually instead of having the lessons in a physical classroom. Technology in the classroom was especially taken up by many schools during the Covid-19 period, when aspects such as remote learning were introduced as a way of coping and adapting to the changing times.
Nevertheless, in as much as technology in the classroom has a number of benefits, it also has a number of disadvantages. One such disadvantage is that it causes increased distractions.
A report based on a survey completed by the Program for International Assessment highlights that 59% of students are distracted by their fellow students when they are using their devices in the classrooms. The other disadvantage is that the use of technology in the classroom reduces physical activity and socialization. Because of this, students suffer further issues such as improper mental health, poor physical health, and the inability to socialize with people outside of the digital world.
One other disadvantage of introducing technology in the classroom is the associated high cost of acquiring and maintaining digital learning tools such as interactive whiteboards, student information systems, and educational apps and software. Technology in the classroom may be considered a positive aspect by some, but it poses more disadvantages than advantages, and such shortcomings include increased distractions, reduced physical activity and socialization, and the high cost of acquiring and maintaining digital learning tools.
