Methods
Altogether, the presented research uses concept synthesization from various fields of study, such as psychology, media studies, and marketing. There is cross-validation of results from similar long-term research works, including those of Steinsbekk et al. (2021) and Vall-Roqué et al. (2021), to analyze repetition patterns comprehensively. Dividing information into concepts such as social comparison and algorithm impact helps to draw more focus on psychological processes.
Participants
Participants will be kids from a local elementary school. The kids would be randomly assigned to either the manipulation or control conditions.
Materials
The stimuli in the study would consist of 30 minute Looney Tunes cartoon shows. These cartoons would either contain physical violence (such as hitting with a hammer, exploding with dynamite, etc.) or would no instances of violence. The cartoons would involve the same characters, so as to minimize extraneous effects.
Design and Procedure
In the period prior to recess, the children will be split into two random groups. The manipulation group will watch the violent cartoons for the 30 minute period, while the control group will watch non-violent cartoons for the same 30-min period. The children will then be allowed to enter the playground for recess.
During recess, the children will be observed for aggressive behaviors. Aggressive behaviors are operationally defined in this context as: shouting, arguing, kicking/punching, wrestling, and name-calling. The amount of these behaviors will be recorded for each student during the 30-min recess period.
