PART 1—-
Consider art is produced in a range of media and for different reasons. Artists, whether trained or untrained, may use their creativity to bring forth something new of value that can enrich and inform our lives. Remember the content (meaning or message communicated) and form of art (the total effect of the combined visual qualities within a work) is closely linked.
Now read and consider this article, The Development of Public Art and its Future Passive, Active and Interactive Past, Present and Future by Ralfonso Gschwend. The article is tied to Art and Artist’s role in society (communication), 3D art forms. Pay particular attention to the reasons why the author believes in the importance of kinetic and interactive sculpture. Enlarge images to get a good look at their interactive qualities.
Consider:
How can interactive public art change a viewers art viewing experience and do you think it’s valuable?
Do you agree that “The new generation of young people are trained and already very used to interactive and dynamic communications. They expect this interaction, whether it is with their smart phones, their TV, or from the art they encounter in public places”? And what are the benefits or detriments of public art being instant and interactive?
How do you think this new art form is of value that can enrich and inform our lives?

This article explores modern public 3D art forms and aligns with the learning objective of this unit:
Articulate and analyze how society influences the interpretation and message of a work of art.
PART 2——
Read Chapter 2 pages 48-68 in online text.
Now that we covered all the elements and principles of design put your expertise to use!
This lesson will help you analyze and explain the visual elements and principles in a work of art. You are essentially dissecting the art. Figuring out how the artist put the work together, will bring you further understanding of the work, the reasons behind the choices the artist made, how the elements and principles work together in that particular work, and insight into the concept of the piece. Discuss your analysis to broaden your understanding of the work.
Identify, show and discuss the main design elements and principles of composition- How they contribute to the composition, how it works to enhance the meaning of the piece and how does it move the viewer around the piece in an orchestrated way.
**Remember art can range from aesthetically pleasing to commentary whether political, social, ecological, etc. Also we all take our own experiences and cultures with us when viewing artwork. This lends itself to some variation in interpretations. Try to be as objective as possible.
HERE’S HOW TO COMPLETE THE ASSIGNMENT:
Look up the image, The Ballad of the Jealous Lover of Lone Green Valley by Thomas Hart Benton.
Analyze the work, finding the elements of art and principles of design and functions of art that are used in the work.
You will make a slide presentation. Decide what elements and principles to emphasize in slides by marking up the image (see example video on Birth of Venus) and what text to include to complete the presentation in google slides or powerpoint or any slide program.
Make one slide just for the main shape analysis (actual shapes and implied shapes), as in video and Guernicaexample.png.pdf.
Make another slide for a value pattern analysis (like the exercise below example ValuePatternEx.pdf,
Create 1 or 2 other slides to show other elements and principles used in the work, ex. color, movement….use any visual aides you need to make your point. Circling items, arrows to show directional forces, etc…
Import the images into a slide program and mark up. (it can also be done outside of the computer and photographed or scanned back in) Identify, show and discuss the main design elements and principles of composition- How they contribute to the composition, how it works to enhance the meaning of the piece and how does it move the viewer around the piece in an orchestrated way.
Include text slides with main comments to take us successfully through your analysis of the piece. Do a thorough, concise job. You should have 5-8 slides describing ALL the elements and principles of design employed in the painting.
Save the slides as a .pdf, .jpg, .pptx, only.
Post the presentation to the assignment.
