BME 1054L: Introduction to Biomedical Engineering Computing
Extra Credit Assignment: Module 1 – MATLAB Environment
Instructions:
1. Clearly mention your FIU Panther ID in the beginning of your MATLAB code and in the document you intend on submitting. (I can add this later)
2. Rename the .m script with your last name and first name along with module number.
a. Ex: main.m grace_helbling_1.m
3. Ideally, your submission should be done through Canvas and include:
a. The completed and renamed .m script.
b. A PDF or Word file with plots and a small write up answering and explaining any
questions asked.
Questions: Answer each question to the best of your abilities.
1. Bernoulli Equation –
a.
The Bernoulli equation is a popular equation used in the field of fluid dynamics. It
describes the behavior of fluid as a function of pressure, velocity, height, gravity, and
density.
Clinicians often use a simplified form of the equation shown below that only
accounts for the pressure difference between 2 points and the velocity at the 2nd,
downstream, point. It can be used in diagnosing patients who may have symptoms of
aortic valve stenosis, where their aortic valve area shrinks and reduces blood flow. Mild aortic valve stenosis is said to occur if the pressure drop is >15 mmHg. A group of
patients have an echocardiography performed on them and their resulting downstream
velocities are 2.10, 0.65, 2.40, 1.80, 0.20, 0.32, and 1.20 m/s, which of these patients would you suspect may have aortic valve stenosis?
