You started this course with understanding the big picture and learning about the community, then you learned about each individual child. Now you are going to compare four children’s abilities in each developmental domain to the age-appropriate milestones or grade level standards.
Assessing milestones can be a daunting task, so investigate how your center or school documents students’ development and how they share that information with the families.
Allocate at least 5 hours in the field to support this field experience.
Follow the instructions below and complete Topic 3 of the “Birth through Preschool Early Childhood Practicum Template.”
Part 1: Identification
Work with your mentor teachers to identify the age-appropriate milestones or grade level standards in each domain and create mini-assessment opportunities (often play-based with observational notes) that allow students to master learning goals. Identify four students from Topic 2 Clinical Field Experience A that you observed and can focus on in this and future field experiences to help them meet a specific milestone. Determine each of the four students’ current level on the milestones or standards for each developmental domain. Use the following levels:
Exceed – goes beyond the expected level
Meets – meets the expectation
Partially meets – almost meets the expectation
Does not meet – the child is missing skills or abilities to meet the expectation
Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the mentor teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.
Part 2: Reflection
In 250-500 words, reflect on the following:
How will you meet the needs of the remaining children in the classroom while you are working with the four students individually?
How does the experience of observing children, documenting their learning, and identifying a goal support your understanding of their needs as a future professional educator?
How will you use this experience in the future as a classroom teacher?
Support your work in the template with 2-3 scholarly resources (include citations for standards or milestones).
While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
