Discuss the following questions/topics: what does it mean to be cool; what makes your subject cool; and how does your subject’s coolness relate to the era within which he or she operated.

American Cool Final ProjectIn many ways, the idea of coolness is a uniquely American concept born of our society’s rejection of authority, our love of rebelliousness, and an emerging post-WWII prosperity that allowed the youth generation to identify its own heroes and cultural icons. In this assignment you are asked to pick one person, a publically know American from the 20th or 21st century, who you feel best epitomizes coolness in his or her era.

The following criteria should guide your choice of subject:•

1.) an original artistic vision carried off with a signature style• 2.) cultural rebellion or transgression for a given generation• 3.) iconic power, or instant visual recognition• 4.) a recognized cultural legacy•

5) A seminal figure from a non-artistic field, such as politics, advocacy, etc., who nonetheless was broadly identified as cool, and who had a clear and prominent impact on American culture( President Obama comes to mind as an example, as does someone like Shirley Chisholm, etc.)Once you have chosen the subject for your project, you will need to prepare the two elements of the project itself: a 2-3 page ESSAY or a coolness resume (see provided example) and a visual presentation. Each element of your project should

discuss the following questions/topics: what does it mean to be cool; what makes your subject cool; and how does your subject’s coolness relate to the era within which he or she operated.

As an option, you may choose to create a coolness resume for your subject rather than write an essay. If you choose to do so, your Coolness resume must include all the elements included above.
