Navigating career opportunities is not what it used to be. Long since passed are the days of networking without social media! For this CT option, you will explore your professional social media presence.
How can you remain authentic while adhering to the needs of a specific organization or field where you’re looking to build a career?
Reflect on your readings this week that explain late-stage capitalism and the culture of capitalism to guide you in this week’s assignment as you consider your social media professional presence as part of how you might network in today’s economic climate. Social media is one of the most popular ways to network professionally.
While people still rely on internal opportunities and finding jobs from friends and colleagues, networking remains the most effective way to land a job and establish a career, beating out responding to job postings, sending out unsolicited résumés, or frequenting job fairs. As we are now familiar, the economy is about people. And so when you’re networking, you’re doing so within the social organization of the economy. Consider this as you build your professional presence within social media. Go one step further and consider social media part of the system of (late-stage) capitalism driving our current economy! In short, networking is powerful for your career and can be accomplished through social media. This assignment aims to help you create your social media networking plan using key questions to guide you.
Answer the following questions in essay format, or keep to the numbered list. Be thorough in your responses and treat this assignment as a living document you may want to return over time. What are some professional attributes you want to be represented online? List three areas of your career interest. You may have different career trajectories to explore.
What are your short-term professional goals for the next three years? List three goals.
What are your long-term professional goals for the next five to ten years? List three goals.
What social media platforms do you use (or plan on using) for job leads?
Consider which are common in your field. If you’re going into documentary filmmaking, Tik Tok is a good choice. You’ll want to build a robust LinkedIn profile to explore the nonprofit sector. Note the types of social media that have not worked for you, and note why.
Don’t discard these; they might be helpful at another career stage. Note also how you’ve used these sites. Perhaps one of your professional goals is to use social media differently. Given your career goals, who should be in your social media network? These can be people you know and want to know (or think you should know). Your paper should be 350-700 words, or 1-2 pages in length.
You are not required to use research for this assignment, but you are encouraged to do so, especially what has been provided to you this week. The CSU Global Library is also a good place to find sources. You can access the CSU Global Writing Center and Library through the links in the Course Navigation Panel.
